Antarctica Day 8 - Cape Valentine
December 28, 2014 to January 9, 2015
In the afternoon we headed out for our final Antarctica excursion. This time to Cape Valentine. It was an exciting place to go because throughout the trip we had been attending presentations on Antarctica history and a big part of that history is Shackelton's expedition in 1916, where the men spent 4 months at Cape Valentine waiting to be rescued. Being there it was just crazy to think anyone could survive there. We made it to a small landing spot and got to be entertained by the seals for a while. After being on land for a bit, we went out for a 45 minute zodiac cruise around Elephant Island. Towards the end the weather was really starting to come in and by the time we got back to the boat the waves were really going and the gangway was bouncing all around - side to side and 2 feet below and above water. Needless to say it was quite the process getting off the zodiacs onto the boat! After we were all back on the boat, the ship turned north and we started our journey back across the Drake Passage.
