Antarctica Day 5 - Mikkelsen Harbour
December 28, 2014 to January 9, 2015
This morning we woke up at 7:30am to our first look at the Antarctica Peninsula. So beautiful and unbelievable amounts of snow! We went out for our first excursion at 10am, to Mikkelsen Harbour where we had almost 3 hours to walk around. There was really deep snow that you would fall into up to your knee. Talk about a good workout - although it's a rare day when any workout of mine includes penguins everywhere and a view of the Antarctica peninsula in the distance. Wow! We were lucky it was such a clear day – our ship leader said most people can’t see the pinnacle of Antarctica, which we could that day. Once again we had amazing weather - very warm.

Once we got on land, we didn't even need our jacket, gloves or hats. From where we landed, we walked through the deep snow and past seals taking a rest in the snow to the other side of the island, where it become more rocky and there were penguins as far as the eye could see. We just stood there watching them walk back and forth, or sit in their rock nest and protect their eggs. A few little guys even came by just a foot or 2 from me. Very cool. I sat on a rock for a while looking out at the water and wildlife, wishing I could stay in that spot forever. Eventually it became time to go and we made our way back to the zodiacs. The harbour we were in was beautiful, and on the way back to the boat we took a short cruise ride around to enjoy more of the sights.
