Antarctica Day 4 - Whaler's Bay
December 28, 2014 to January 9, 2015
The boat traveled from Hope Bay to Whaler's Bay over lunch, and now we were ready to head out for our second excursion of the day, this time stepping foot on Deception Island. We got a little better at our wetskins/gumboots routine, lined up on the 3rd deck for the zodiacs and took the very short ride from the boat to shore. It was much colder than this morning - very windy. The island was unique – black sand shores and a lot of remnants from the whaler days – oil vats, shelters, and old wooden structures that were destroyed and half buried from the volcano in 1970.

We took a short historical tour of the island first (provided by our ship historian), and then had time to walk around on our own. Around 6pm the crazy polar plunge people ran into the water for a freezing cold dip. My friend Julie did it – I took the easy way out by saying I would video! Immediately after the plunge we went back to the boat to have dinner and set sail for tomorrow's excursion location.
